Hurricane Irene

With Hurricane Irene quickly approaching the States, South Florida grower fear its winds will damage their crops even though Irene is still about 150 miles east of Miami. Irene is projected to hit land in North Carolina and travel up the coast on land to Virginia this weekend. News reports say 8 people are already injured in Florida with a possibility one might be dead. The estimated damage Irene could cost the East Coast is about $13.9 billion in insured losses and $20 billion in overall economic losses due to lost hours at work, power outages, interruption of shipping  and airline traffic. But this hurricane is possibly going to be as strong as a category 2 when it reaches Long Island, NY. Reports say this will not be as bad as Hurricane Katrina but it is being compared to Hurricane Gloria. Be safe everyone!

Crazy Times??

This year has been one for the books. Fuel prices are up and then down and then up again this week they went up again and are averaging about $3.949 per gallon. The government is broke and looking for cuts to make that will definitely impact everyone eventually. The stock market is up and then its down then its down some more. And did we even have a summer this year? I know in Washington State we had summer for about 5 1/2 days. The weather across the US has been crazy and out of control. How does everyone deal with these such things? I'd love every one's feedback. How do these things effect your business? Your personal life?

Have a fantastic weekend where ever you are :)

Tonnage

Freight tonnage has steadily been on the rise this year. Tonnage has gone up 5.5% this year so far. This is great news for carriers who are seeing nice profits in their quarterly earnings. Many see this as a positive sign for our economy when so many are worried about our Nations current financial situation.

Fuel- Efficient Trucks

While President Obama has been working on improving the efficiency of cars and light-duty trucks, he also has been working on doing the same for heavy-duty trucks. While we are still waiting for the final approval on the new standards for fuel-efficient vehicles, people in the business still can't help but be excited for the changes in store for 2012. They are estimating this will said some 530 million barrels of oil over the life time of this program. This is exciting news as a consumer and business owner with the saving we will notice when filling up our tanks as well as improving our carbon footprint.

Trucking Gone Wild

Rates are up, Fuel is up and the freight seems to be hit and miss. What’s' up with that you ask? It's called supply and demand and each and every year we seem the same turn of events play out. This year may be a bit more noticeable than others as the economy is like try to throw up on a roller coaster. Pick the wrong moment and you're in trouble, pick the right moment and it's as if it didn't happen. Our economic strain is no different, fuel has yo-yoed for an entire year and rates and equipment availability have done the same. Suppliers are ordering smaller amounts and the manufacturers are feeling the strain. They're raising their rates to keep employees employed and passing this on to you and I. Have you seen the prices at the grocery store lately?? How do we fix this? No really, how do we fix this?
